Grainne is the first international U16 player arising from Wicklow Hockey Club. We are immensely proud of her as a community in which she grew up as a hockey player. We know she will represent her country wholeheartedly and with all her skill. Please support Grainne and the team with your donation! The funds will go towards the cost of travel, training, and matches for the whole team, throughout Europe. To donate visit the Clubshop in ClubZap (Clubhouse button on home screen) or click here.
As you are probably aware, the Irish Women’s senior team are 2018 World Cup silver medallists and qualified for Tokyo 2020 in front of a record crowd of people in Energia Park in addition to record TV viewership in November 2019. Their success inspired the nation and participation levels in hockey have increased since 2018. The JAG players are the pipeline to repeat this success in future Women’s Hockey World Cups and for the 2024 and 2028 Olympic pathway. In spite of this, this talented group of international athletes get no funding from the Irish Government.
This year there is an excellent player pathway & international fixtures programme in place for the Irish U16s players with participation in competitions in Scotland, the 5 Nations Tournament in Holland and the 6 Nations Tournament in Spain. The cost of this programme will be in excess of €70,000. The burden of funding each year’s programme falls to the parents of the players and onto the players themselves.
Let's all back Gráinne and the Ireland U-16 Team!!!
Thanks for your support, WicklowHC Committee
